What does ‘waterproof’ really mean?
Waterproof means impervious to water – It does not allow water to pass through it, providing the best protection.
Water Resistant means it does not allow water to pass through easily. While not fully waterproof it provides a fair level of protection in mild conditions.
Water Repellent – Refers to materials that are treated with a special coating, that allows the water to bead and roll off the surface instead of soaking in.
How is waterproofing technology used in footwear?
Our brands incorporate a waterproof membrane lining into the construction of the shoes which sits under the outer leather or textile. The membrane of choice for most of our brands is the well known and trusted GORE-TEX . Whilst some brands such as Danish brand Ecco use GORE-TEX as well as their own in house developed waterproof membrane technology, as seen on the Drury sneaker.
To protect the outer layer, some brands will also apply a waterproof coating to the upper. We recommend using a waterproofing Protector Spray to maintain or add a water repellent finish to the upper of your shoes.
What is GORE-TEX?
GORE-TEX , is a patented highly breathable, windproof and 100% waterproof textile membrane which sits between the outer leather and the lining of the shoe.
The GORE-TEX membrane is made up of serval layers and has over 9 billion pores per square inch. The small pores cleverly allow perspiration vapour to vent, whilst withstanding water entry pressures, keeping any external water out and your feet dry- genius! This makes for a high-quality waterproof and windproof shoe that allows your feet to breathe, for optimum foot comfort.

How can I can I make my shoes more waterproof?
We recommend that waterproofing Protector Spray is applied prior to wearing new shoes to protect effectively against water, oil and dirt. The waterproofing should be maintained by re-applying Protector Spray every two to three months or as needed. This will provide a protective water-resistant coating on the surface of the shoe upper that will allow water to bead off the surface.
